What about the rights of Irish citizens in the UK after Brexit?

Lobby group,Traveller Movement, has published a new report which says the UK government has failed to guarantee the rights of Irish citizens, post Brexit.

The report ‘Brexit and Irish citizens in the UK: how to safeguard the rights of Irish citizens in an uncertain future’ reveals that many of the rights currently enjoyed by Irish citizens in the UK, such as exemptions from deportation and prohibitions on employment of foreigners, exist only because they are EU citizens and not because they are Irish citizens. 

The paper examines what would happen to the rights of Irish citizens under UK law, if the special rights of EU citizens end, without a new legal provision for Irish citizens.

European Council President, Donald Tusk, has travelled to Dublin to discuss Brexit with the Taoiseach, Leo Varadkar.

Tusk says the EU is fully behind Ireland’s request that there should be no hard border on the island of Ireland after Brexit. Tusk said Brexit cannot be allowed to destroy the cooperation achieved by the Good Friday Agreement.

Sir Geoffrey Vos,spoke about the consequences of Brexit on UK's jurisdiction and UK law

Sir Geoffrey Vos, Chancellor of the High Court,has spoken on the future for the UK’s jurisdiction and English law after Brexit at a legal business seminar in Frankfurt. 

He focused on the independence and accountability of UK and European judiciaries, and said the UK aimed to face up to the challenges of Brexit and work with European colleagues to achieve solutions that work for UK and European business.

The Chancellor outlined the serious challenges regarding the citizens’ rights, the regulation of anti-competitive practices and the question of financial passporting and regulation that are particularly important for businesses across the sectors, and across the EU, as well as in the UK.
